Places of Supreme Spiritual Importance and Spiritual Tourism
Recently, there was a news about plans to build a helipad in Sabarimala. We already have everything that a man who lives a “material” life needs available in Sabarimala, except women which is due to the sole reason that women are not allowed there. Transportation is available up to Pamba and there is a man-made walkway up to the sannidhanam. There are sufficient number of eateries where you can get your favorite food and hotels and lodges where you can have a comfortable night’s stay. The only hardship people go through is when there is overcrowding - when the infrastructure and the systems become incapable of accommodating the crowd.
The very idea of temples is to bring man out of material life and bring him to the path of spirituality. It is a way to remind him of the supreme reality called God - in whatever form that one is comfortable with - and of the futility of the materialistic living and the importance and benefits of spiritual living. For an ordinary man, the sense of peacefulness experienced in the temple is temporary: it lingers for some time before he completely falls back to his mundane activities. Frequent visits to the temple helps in experiencing this sense of peacefulness more often.
There are places of supreme spiritual importance such as Sabarimala in Kerala and Amarnath in the Himalayas. These places have different histories but one fact that runs common in all is that they are hard to access. These are the places where people seeking spiritual realisation went and meditated. For them these places were the ultimate stage in the path of spiritual journey and self realization. At that stage, their minds were pure and were filled with with eternal love towards everything - living and non-living - around them. In this state of mind, there was no fear of death - leave alone hardships. Their minds were focussed on the supreme goal of self realization which made anything they faced on the way as part of the journey. One set off on this journey when he had already achieved this state of mind that neither saw nor recognized any hardships or adversities.
Now, what has happened to these places of supreme spiritual importance? Do they provide the atmosphere that the spiritual seekers wanted to experience? Majority of people who visit these places are “spiritual tourists”. The Government is facilitating spiritual tourism by organizing everything the tourists need and making their journey “comfortable”. Instead, what the Government should do is to keep these places as sacred and pure as they had been by restricting access only by the spiritual seekers. Once all the “facilities” and “comforts” are removed, the “spiritual tourists” will automatically stop coming. Let the forests grow. Let the man-made roads be gradually taken over by the nature. Let a walkway be formed by the footsteps of the real seekers.
The real seekers won’t complain. Nobody needs to facilitate anything for them. Allow women in Sabarimala. Men won’t get distracted by women. Women won’t worry about any hardships or discomfort. Let these seekers inspire the lesser mortals and lead them in the path of spirituality. Let more and more people be inspired to take up spiritual living. This will eventually create a happy society. This is the essence of Hindu philosophy. This is what Vedanta prescribes. Let the places of supreme spiritual importance serve their purpose.

Hey Rajeev, Nice thought to ponder. Only one thing I wished to mention is that I do not think prevention of women to sabarimala is for reasons stated here. It is more to do with the well-being of women and to do with her body. I have heard Sadhguru say how subtle women are because of their physical nature (prakriti) and how vulnerable they are physically due to the way they have been designed, let us say (referring only to physical nature ofcourse)which is why certain things were brought into practice but later people mis-interpreted such practices in so many ways that it became more of a pain for a women rather than for her well-being. :) The vibrations and energies that exist with some of the places like Sabarimala would probably affect the energies that women have on account of their physical nature...And yes, getting to HIM is no easy task, until life grinds one to the extent that he/she finally and only then (for most of them) sadly realize the truth and the difference between the myth and the truth..so these places were situated high up in the mountains where people had to exert their bodies to certain level of hardship in order to get there and I am certain that for the energies that our ancestors consecrated in such places, there probably is a need to put the body through some hardship to be able to sustain the energies once they reach uphill!! The Government should ensure to maintain the temples well, neatly and preserve the sanctity of the places to the best extent possible and no harm in providing comfort as well..It is for the devotee to focus on the temple rather than the comfort...It is great to have a mobile phone to talk to someone miles away, but what is more critical is the fact that one must not loose sight of the fact that mobile is only facilitating the communication and it is great that we have a tool today..but the issue is people focus on mobile more than the communication or the destination!!! in everything people are loosing the focus on the crux..sadhana helps one to get stuck to the goal rather than the ways that lead to it...ways are plenty, but focus on the goal is what is critical!! If that happens, roads pave way naturally leading one to the destination...for hardship faced to go uphill is also relative to each one's perception...so whether there is a road or not, forest or not, pathway or not..everything is okay for as long as one is determined to each uphill and has all his focus and attention on the destination! :)
ReplyDeleteRanjani, thanks for sharing your views here. If the discrimination is on the basis of physical strength and vulnerability then old people and children shouldn't be allowed. But the irony is that girl children and old women are allowed! It is the mental readiness that is more important than physical strength. When a woman is mentally ready to tread the spiritual path, is her physical strength / circumstances a matter of concern? You know the answer :)
DeleteKindly read about one more spiritual place, its maintenance and importance :)http://blog.ishafoundation.org/sadhguru/spot/why-kashi/
ReplyDeleteVery true.
ReplyDeleteThe time spent during the long arduous trek provides sufficient time for preparing the mind by stripping it of mundane thoughts, anxiety, worry and all forms of negative thinking. While one gets used to the rigours both physically and mentally, calmness descends assisting in spiritual thoughts.
It's all about perception and that is a choice we have. Just as money is not evil in itself, human greed for it is, woman is not the reason for man's problems, his attitude towards her as a physical object of sense gratification, is. Women can be as spiritual, or otherwise, as men are.
ReplyDeleteThe soul has no gender, in fact no religion either. It is the body that has gender - and bodies we have, we aren't. It is the mind that has religious belief systems - minds we have, souls we are. Bodies and minds constantly change, souls do not. Ego is rooted in body-consciousness or ignorance. The soul is higher than both body and mind (including the intellect, the discriminative, discerning human intelligence or Buddhi which is often called the higher mind), and a conduct befitting a soul is spirituality. Religion is about practices, rituals and dogma ; spirituality is about how you conduct yourself -even when no one is watching, even in the greatest privacy of your thoughts. Both men and women are equally strong or weak potentially, depending on how well or poorly they connect to their soul-awareness.
In fact, other things remaining equal, women somewhat tend to be more spiritual than men because they tend to be more heart-centric, while men tend to be more reason-driven. My Master, Sri Paramahansa Yogananda (author of the life-transforming spiritual classic 'Autobiography of a Yogi' which can be freely downloaded here : www.yogananda.net/ay), said to be spiritually complete, we must have both - predominantly masculine qualities like reason, strength, etc. and pre-dominantly feminine qualities like love and compassion.
Men can be physically away from women but what gain if they think about women, and the other way round too ?
Womanhood is essentially motherhood, and must be respected as that - by both men and women. The creation is Mother - so we say Mother Nature or Jaganmata - she is Radhey ; the Spirit is Heavenly Father or Param Pita, and is Krishna or Govind. They dance together in ecstacy. Radhey-Radhey-Radhey Govind Jai....
It's all about perception or approach and that is a choice we have. Stephen Covey rightly says, the way we look at our problems, is the problem.
